The first thing Nicola noticed when she opened her eyes was that she had the worldâs worst headache. But the second thing she noticed was that she couldnât put her hands to her head to check on what might be causing her pain because they were bound by duct tape, tied behind her back and fastened around the chair she was sitting on.
Realising that she was restrained, Nicola began to panic and tried to call out for help, but her voice was nothing but a dry croak, hinting that it might have been a while since she lubricated her throat. Her dehydration and headache were no doubt made worse by all of the wine she had consumed during Christmas dinner, but that felt like a long time ago now.
But was that the case? What time was it?
And where the hell was she?
Looking around, Nicola saw a bare brick wall to her left and a generic plasterboard wall straight ahead. There was another brick wall on her right, and as she started to panic a little more that she was really trapped in some kind of tomb, she strained against her restraints to turn her head and see over her shoulder to check out what was behind her. But when she managed it, she saw that there was a door in this room, and it was about twenty feet away.
That meant that there was a way out.
She just had to get to it.
Attempting to get to her feet, Nicola was then met with the grim realisation that it wasnât just her hands that were tied together. Her feet were too, her ankles wrapped together in thick tape, and while they werenât fastened to the chair like her hands were, it was clear she was going to have a very hard time moving around. But that couldnât stop her, not if she wanted to get out of here and not if she wanted to save her family.
What had happened to them? They had been poisoned, Nicola remembered. But why? And where was Ben now? Was he safe?
Nicola struggled to keep herself calm as she realised she had absolutely no idea what the answers were to any of those questions, just like she had no idea how she had ended up in this room. Had she been hit over the head? That would explain why her skull was throbbing, as well as why she didnât recall being put in this room and tied to this chair. But regardless of how, why, and what had happened, Nicola knew only one thing mattered now. She had to get out of here and try and find her family, so that meant she was going to have to get to that door, regardless of how crippled she was by her restraints.
Opting to try shuffling first, Nicola wriggled her body in the hope that it would be enough to move the chair and get her closer towards the door behind her. But that didnât work, and while the
